Using chew |
|
Using these forms of Chew was pretty simple. With twist and Plug tobacco, all you had to do was either bite or cut a piece off and chew. With leaf chew, you would simply take a leaf or two out of the box, or pouch, and place them in your mouth. A common misnomer back then was that Nicotine would enter the body thru the teeth while chewing. We know now that Nicotine is absorbed thru the mucous membranes in the cheek and gums. With either form, a large amount of tobacco “juice” was produced and it had to be expelled. This need created an icon of the old west, the Spittoon. |
